OBJETIVE: Determine if the Áscaris Lumbricoides infection is a risk factor to allergic persistent asthma METHODS: An observational, retrospective and analytical study of cases and controls was carried out. The sample was consisted by 532 clinical histories of children treated in the pediatric service of the Albrecht Hospital of Trujillo between 2012 and 2018 (266 patients for Cases and 266 for Controls). The information was collected by means of a data collection form (Annex 3) and also the possible influence of important intervening variables such as the presence of allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, obesity, low birth weight, history of asthma parenthood and the male gender was analyzed. RESULTS: In the group of patients with persistent asthma, 148 (56%) were male, 37% had obesity, 3% had low birth weight, 24% had family history of asthma and 26% had eosinophilia >4%. The frequency of Áscaris Lumbricoides infection in the children with persistent asthma was 15%, and in the children with intermitent asthma 13%. Ascariasis didn’t show a statistically significant association with allergic persistent asthma(OR: 1,17, IC 95%: 0,71-1,92, p : 0.52). Clinical features as allergic rhinitis ((OR: 1.45, IC 95%:1.01-2.09, p: 0.042) and obesity (OR: 3.4, IC 95%: 2.22 - 5.25, p: 0.001) increased the risk of allergic persistent asthma; however, the presence of atopic dermatitis (OR: 0.46, IC 95%: 0.29- 0-71, p: 0.001) was a protective factor. CONCLUSIONS: Ascariasis is not a risk factor of allergic persistent asthma.
