To determine the risk factors for urinary tract infection (UTI) by germs producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) in pediatric patients at the Hospital Belén de Trujillo, from January 2014 to February 2020. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Observational research, analytical case-control, retrospective, basic level. The sample comprised 123 hospitalized pediatric patients, including 41 cases (with UTI caused by ESBL-producing germs) and 82 controls (with UTI caused by non-ESBL-producing germs). Chi square tests were performed, Odds Ratios (OR) were calculated. The SPSS 25 program was used. RESULTS: Female sex (OR=2.727 [1.207-6.163], p=0.014) and urban origin (OR=2.852 [1.312-6.20], p=0.007) were epidemiological risk factors for UTI due to ESBL-producing germs; Regarding the clinical risk criteria, previous hospitalization in the last 3 months (OR=12.48 [4.987-31.230], p<0.001), previous pyelonephritis (OR=9.586[3.278-29.636], p<0.001), fever ≥38° on admission OR=8.553 [1.915-38.207], p<0.001) and vesicoureteral reflux (OR=6.857 [1.318-35.665], p=0.009) as risk factors for infection by ESBL germs. CONCLUSION: There are risk factors for urinary tract infection by ESBL producing germs in pediatric patients at the Hospital Belén de Trujillo, 2014-2020. These factors are female sex, urban origin, history of hospitalizations and previous pyelonephritis.
