OBJECTIVE: To analyze whether coping in adult population exposed to an earthquake in the Piura Region 2021 is a factor associated with the presence of post-traumatic stress symptoms. METHODOLOGY: An observational, analytical-cross-sectional, and retrospective field study, with the collection of primary data through surveys of households, following the participants' acceptance of informed consent. The sample size was calculated using the EPIDAT 4.3 program. For data collection and association through analytical statistics, a significance level of p<0.05 was employed for interpretation. RESULTS: The study included 143 adult participants residing in areas near the epicenter of the earthquake. Active coping was the most used coping style in the affected population. The prevalence of post-traumatic stress symptoms was 41.3% in adult survivors almost two months after the devastating earthquake, with 28% of them experiencing symptoms of moderate to moderately severe intensity. The presence of post-traumatic stress symptoms was significantly associated with female gender, moderate depression, moderate anxiety, and active coping. No association was found between passive coping and post-traumatic stress. CONCLUSION: Coping in adult population exposed to an earthquake in Piura Region 2021 is indeed a factor associated with the presence of post-traumatic stress symptoms
