To determine if prematurity is a risk factor for diabetes mellitus in pediatric patients with obesity treated at the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital. Material and methods: This study corresponds to a case and control design. 150 clinical records of pediatric patients with obesity were included in the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital during the period from January 2014 to December 2018, provided by the archiving service of the hospital. A data collection sheet comprising all the study variables was used. The data obtained were transferred to the statistical package IBM SPSS Version 25.0 adapted for processing and subsequent analysis. Results: The 150 patients were divided into 2 groups: 125 obese patients without Diabetes Mellitus and 25 patients with Diabetes Mellitus. Only 10.7% of the patients were premature, of which only 5 had Diabetes Mellitus. Both groups were similar statistically, with a female predominance (51%) and of urban origin (56%). Similarly, for the quantitative variables they were similar with an average age of 13.92 and 13.78 for patients with and without Diabetes Mellitus respectively, and in the case of the Body Mass Index; 29.65 and 29.25 respectively. It was found that prematurity is a risk factor for developing diabetes mellitus, with an OR calculation = 2.59 (CI: 95%, 1.01 - 10.24, p <0.05) Conclusions: Prematurity is a risk factor for diabetes mellitus in pediatric patients with obesity.
