Objectives: To demonstrate that type 2 diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for subsequently suffering from Parkinson's disease in people over 60 years. Materials and Methods: Cases and controls study, retrospective, analytical and observational, with a total sample size of 342 medical records reviewed (171 cases and 171 controls); collected at the Dos de Mayo National Hospital in Lima. Results: The Chi-square test was used to show that there was an association between Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Parkinson's Disease, which indicates that there is a relationship between the variables studied and the association is significant (p <0.05). According to our study, diabetes mellitus acts as a risk factor for Parkinson's disease (OR: 1.6; CI: 1.044 - 2.452). Reviewing other variables, it is determined that both the history of Parkinson's disease in the family as well as Diabetes Mellitus act as predictors of developing said disease, but the Parkinson's disease history is a better predictor. Conclusion: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a risk factor for developing Parkinson's disease.
