The application of a single course of prenatal corticosteroids before preterm birth has become a standard for prophylactic treatment against respiratory distress syndrome. However, evidence of the influence of this pattern with respect to some outcomes during childhood remains unexplored in a definite way. Objective: To determine if antenatal corticotherapy is a risk factor for asthma in children. Material and methods: The present study is a case-control design investigation in 114 patients divided into 2 groups: patients exposed and not exposed to antenatal corticotherapy. Results: The frequency of antenatal corticotherapy in patients with bronchial asthma was 16%. The frequency of antenatal corticotherapy in patients without bronchial asthma was 4%. The frequency of cesarean delivery and non-exclusive breastfeeding were more frequent in the group of patients with asthma compared to the group without asthma. Conclusion: Antennatal corticotherapy is a risk factor for asthma in children.
