Objective: To determine whether psychological distress influences quality of life in resident physicians at the Regional Teaching Hospital and Hospital Belén de Trujillo during the period between January and March 2023. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out and resident medical professionals working for at least one year in the Hospital were interviewed virtually. Participants were administered a questionnaire including general variables, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the SF-12 questionnaire, which evaluates quality of life in relation to health. Results: The results showed that 56.5% of the resident physicians presented psychological distress, while 38.5% had poor health-related quality of life. A significant association was found between psychological distress and health-related quality of life, where resident physicians with psychological distress were more likely to have poor quality of life compared to those without (53.19% vs 34.25%; p = 0.008). Variables that showed a significant association with poor quality of life adjusting for confounding variables were male sex, categorized BMI, having a car, surgical work area, and having depression. Conclusion: It was determined that there is a significant association between psychological distress and quality of life in resident physicians. Therefore, it is suggested that preventive measures be implemented to reduce the impact of psychological distress on the quality of life of resident physicians
