Introduction: digital rectal exam is one of the tools for the early detection of prostate cancer, which constitutes the most frequent neoplasm in men, and the third leading cause of cancer death in Peru. Objective: To identify the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices related to digital rectal exam in outpatients of the urology service of the Hospital Santa Rosa Piura from January to June 2019. Methodology: prospective, cross-sectional, correlational study, with a sample of 150 male patients aged 40 years and older, it carried out through a survey and the data were analyzed using STATA version 10.0. Results: Of the respondents, 54.67% had an inadequate level of knowledge, the adequate level of knowledge was associated with the marital status of married (p<0.02), urban origin (p < 0.01) and the age under 60 increases 1.39 times the prevalence ratio of having adequate knowledge. 71.33% presented positive attitudes and a relation was found between urban origin and positive attitudes (p<0.03). 61.3% presented inappropriate practices. Conclusion: The respondents had an inadequate level of knowledge, positive attitudes and inadequate practices in relation to digital rectal exam as a measure of early detection of prostate cancer.
