Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, with acute myocardial infarction being the main cause. Since the last decades, the Leukocyte Count has been studied as a prognostic factor to determine post-infarction complications. It is unknown if in our environment it could have utility as a prognostic factor for deaths, duration of hospital stay or if it is related to the stratification of Killip and Kimbal. OBJECTIVES: To study the leukocyte count as a prognostic factor in acute myocardial infarction in adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from the clinical histories of patients who had a diagnosis and reason for admission acute myocardial infarction and who had a leukocyte count at admission. At the same time, a Killip and Kimbal degree was granted according to the evolution described in the Clinical History, the physical examination and other patient's diagnostic tools. RESULTS: It was found that 13.72% of deaths during the hospital stay occurred in patients who presented with leukocytosis at admission. 68.62% of patients presented grade I in the stratification of Killip and Kimbal. The average length of hospital stay was 8 days. CONCLUSIONS: The admission leukocyte count was NOT a prognostic factor for deaths neither hospital stay nor related to the stratification of Killip and Kimbal.
