Introduction: Perineal tearing occurs during labor and can occur spontaneously or iatrogenically. Women who suffer perineal tears during labor present a significant reduction in quality of life due to dyspareunia or fecal incontinence, thus vaginal tears are considered one of the main morbidities of vaginal delivery. Objective: To identify whether perineal tears are related to maternal and fetal risk factors in postpartum women attended at the Victor Ramos Guardia Hospital - Huaraz during 2016-2019. Materials and methods: An observational, analytical cross-sectional study was conducted. Our population consisted of 170 puerperal women; in whom maternal and fetal factors related to perineal tears will be evaluated. Statistical analysis will be performed using the Chi - Square Test for qualitative variables and the Student t - Test for quantitative variables. Results: The medical records of 170 puerperal women were reviewed, of which 123 did not present perineal tear; 31 puerperal women presented first degree tear; 13 second degree tears and 3 third degree tears. The average maternal age of all the puerperal women was 28 years. The most frequent marital status in our study was cohabiting. The educational level of most of the puerperal women was complete secondary school. The most frequent occupation was housewife. Regarding maternal factors, gestational BMI was related to the presence of perineal tears, it was evident that women with overweight and obesity had a higher frequency of perineal tears (p<0.001). Regarding fetal factors, the weight of the newborn (NB) was related to perineal tears (p=0.021). Conclusions: Gestational BMI and newborn weight are related to the presence of perineal tears
