OBJECTIVES: To determine whether marital status, BMI, smoking, first-degree relative with depression, verbal or physical violence of patients, relatives or superiors, chronic illness and hospital traumatic event are associated with increased prevalence of depression in medical interns. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted, evaluating 256 medical interns from the Regional Docent, Belén, Víctor Lazarte Echegaray, Virgen de la Puerta, Florencia de Mora and La Noria hospitals, between September and October 2019. RESULTS: The prevalence of depression at the time of the interview was 30.86%. Bivariate analysis identified sex, BMI categorized as normal, overweight and obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, first-degree relative with depression, presence of hospital traumatic events, presence of both verbal and physical violence, were associated with depression; multivariate analysis identified variables independently associated with depression, smoking, first-degree relative with depression, verbal violence by a non-medical worker and verbal violence by a superior as independently associated variable.
