Detasseling is the most delicate and important labor in corn hybrid seed production. This operation can be done either by hand removal of all tassels in the female parent, or by means of machines which is usually complemented by hand removal. In doing this, it is quite frequent to take one or more leaves at the moment the tassel is pulled out. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the systematic elimination of the leaves on grain yield in the parental line CML 297, starting from the flag leaf to the leaf bearing the corn ear with respect to both testers, tasseled (Check1) and detasseled (Check-2). The research work was conducted in Fundo UPAO belonging to the Private University Antenor Orrego, in Trujillo, Peru. Results showed that tassel removal increased grain yield in 7.5% as compared with the tasseled tester. On the other hand, the elimination of the leaves reduced grain yield in 30.9% and 35.9% with respect to the first and second tester, respectively. Furthermore, with respect to the tasseled tester, ear length was reduced in 8%, the number of grains per row in 4.1% and numbers of ear per plant in 20%. The coefficient of regression of the defoliated plants and grain yield was negative and significant statistically with a value of b= -0.466 t/ha. In general, the correlation coefficients were negative between the defoliated leaves and the variables considered in the study.
