The objective of this research was focused on the necessity to develop and validate a strategic management model to promote the competitiveness of retail sector companies at the base of the pyramid (BOP) in the northern region of Peru, based on theoretical models for strategic management in the retail sector. The methodology of this research has a quantitative approach, based on descriptions of investigations carried out by other authors through a bibliographic review. It is a positivist study, supported in observation, it is a descriptive study of non experimental design. Also, to minimize biases in the information collected, surveys were applied to customers and store managers of the retail sector in the objective market. The type of sampling was simple random. The questionnaire for customers contains questions of numerical measurement or scale, as well as nominal and ordinal measures. The questionnaire of store managers the predominance was in categorical nominal questions. Finally, it was found that the strategic management models that companies in the modern retail sector have are not yet aimed at serving segments of the BOP because they require a different model and with other resources that can serve customers who live more than 30 minutes away from the modern canals. For this, a strategic management model was designed at two levels, a strategic and an operational level focused on promoting the competitiveness of the retail sector in the BOP. This model was evaluated and validated through expert judgment
