OBJECTIVE: To identify whether extreme maternal age is a risk factor for anemia in pregnant women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An analytical, observational retrospective cohort investigation was carried out, the sample consisted of 231 pregnant women (75 exposed and 156 unexposed) using simple random probabilistic sampling. The medical records of the pregnant women treated in the period 2018 – 2022 were used. RESULTS: It was found that extreme maternal age is a risk factor for anemia in pregnant women (RR= 2,730 95% CI (1,889-3,946), likewise the prevalence of pregnancy in women under 19 years of age and over 35 years of age was 12. 6% and 19.9% respectively; regarding the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women under 19 years of age and over 35 years of age, it was 50.3% and 80.0% respectively, where from 10 to 19 years it was 21. 7% for mild anemia and 28.6% for moderate anemia; and in pregnant women over 35 years of age, 30.0% presented mild anemia and 50.0% moderate anemia, in both age groups they did not present severe anemia. When comparing the prevalence of pregnant women with and without a diagnosis of anemia at extreme maternal age, showed that 65.6% presented anemia and 21,0 % did not present anemia. No statistical significance was found in relation to the intervening variables. CONCLUSION: Extreme maternal age is a risk factor for anemia in pregnant women treated at the Pedro Ruiz Gallo Health Center
