This research was conducted with the purpose of describing grief in veterinarians facing the loss of their own pet. The participants were 5 veterinarians from Lima that were within the year of bereavement. It is a qualitative investigation with a phenomenological design, and Semi-structured interviews were employed to collect the information needed. The findings suggest that companion animals are an object of love and the existence of grief following the loss and that there are three specific characteristics that make grieving a pet difficult. The first is social attitudes towards the death of the pet, whether they felt people recognized the loss and grief they were feeling; the second, called the need for rituals, is about the desire for a ritual for them to say goodbye to their pets and third is guilt, which arises from the responsibility felt for the pets live. The study concludes that grieving a pet resulted equally or more intense than losing another loved one. Finally, veterinarians are a relevant population, because they perceive animals as an object of love, care for their wellbeing and according to a study published in the American Pet Products Association (2013) the loss of their pet caused them great pain in the long term.
