Diagnosis and treatment of skeletal disharmonies is still a controversial topic that leads to discuss among orthodontists. Orthodontic diagnostic focuses on vertical and sagittal dimensions, without considering the transverse dimension and their discrepancies. Skeletal and condylar disbalances (morphological and positional asymmetries of the mandible, dental arches, and face) could occur if they are not timely treated. 150 study models were evaluated through Hayes and Andrews element III analyses. Width soft he upper and lower dimensions and their discrepancies were obtained and compared. It was concluded that both analyses had significant differences. Andrews’s analysis showed always bigger measurements because of their farther reference points. Despite these differences, both methods agreed in the majority of cases when the discrepancy was positive. However, in cases where the discrepancy was negative, there were no matches. According to our results, we couldn’t determine if one method is better than the other. It is probably necessary to compare both analyses using a gold standard tomography method in order to find out which of these methods is the most reliable.
