This applied research work seeks to explore and identify different digital distribution models to then determine a self-sustainable digital distribution strategy for a Peruvian university publishing house. Globalization and the technological advances of the Internet and communications give rise to new information and content consumption methods and, hence, to new business models. The publishing industry is no exception to this. Particularly in the case of university publishing houses, technological advances have contributed with a large window of opportunity for publishing houses whose mission is to project the university itself toward society, but they also pose a challenge for sustainability. Under these circumstances, digital books become an attractive way to face overproduction and reduce costs. However, there are other factors to be taken into account such as the immense diversity of titles that makes detectability a challenge. The strategy proposed consists in taking advantage of two key opportunities: The number and variety of potential authors and titles as a result of being part of Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas. The availability of platforms already developed by other companies allowing for different distribution, access and usage methods. The focal point of the strategy is the application of the long tail model. The basis is the increase of publications, and a model that supports visibility is the “Free” model. With this strategy, we expect to cover the expenses concerning digital publications and, after five years, reach an annual profit margin of 5 %. This is an stand-alone project.
