Objective: To determine if there is association between child labor and the ilegal drugs consumption in teenagers of poor areas from India and Peru. Methods: Secondary analysis of the Young Lives prospective cohort. Our exposure variable, child labor was measured in two ways. The first one, any remunerated job, measured as the self-report of the child performing any activity to get money or any benefit. The second one, domestic labor, measured by two reports of the mother or caregiver, and measured if the child performed any maintenance activity or household chores, and if the child received money for these chores. The illegal drug consumption was evaluated by the teenager’s self-report of trying drugs, like marijuana, cocaine and inhalants. We calculated crude and adjusted relative risks (RR, aRR) with their respective 95% confidence interval through Poisson family generalized lineal models. Considering cluster correlation. We performed a country differentiated analysis. Results: We included 1600 participants (966 Indian, and 634 Peruvian). We did not find association between any remunerated job and the illegal drugs consumption. There was association between domestic remunerated labor and illegal drugs consumption, India. (aRR: 1.38; 95%CI: 1.12-1.71). Conclusion: There was association between domestic remunerated labor and illegal drugs consumption in India. In Peru, there was no such association.
