This research aims to determine the relationship between self-esteem and depression among adolescents. The sample for this study consists of 122 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18; 60 of them were orphans and the other 60 non-orphans. The Beck Depression Inventory – II was applied (Sanz, Perdigón & Vásquez, 2003) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rojas et al. 2009) an analysis of the principal components proves the existence of only one factor and the internal consistency of both tests is confirmed. The hypothesis elaborated for this research is also confirmed; the great the self-esteem the less depression in both groups analysed. Orphan and non-orphan adolescents obtained an average depression score of less than 1 (in a scale from 0 to 3) and a mean of 3 in self-esteem (in a scale of 1 to 4). There were no significant differences between both groups.
