OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between sleep quality (SQ) and quality of life (QoL) in firefighters adjusted by clinical and demographics variables. METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study. Participants were selected by random sampling from 51 stations from Metropolitan area in Lima, Peru. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and SF-12 were used to asses SQ (severe, moderate and low deterioration) and QoL (physical and mental impairment), respectively. We perform crude and adjusted – by statistical criteria - Poisson family generalized linear models with robust standard errors for estimating prevalence ratios and their CI95% [PR(CI95%]. RESULTS: From 514 participants, 6.0%, 31.5% and 38.7% had severe, moderate and low deterioration (SQ). Regarding QoL 33.7% had physical component impairment (PCI) and 45.3% had mental component impairment (MCI). In Adjusted model, PCI was associated with low [PR (95% CI): 1.84 (1.15-2.95) (p=0.006)], moderate [PR (95% CI) 2.56 (1.63-4.02) (p<0.001)] and severe deterioration [PR (95% CI): 3.32 (1.93-5.67) (p<0.001)] of SQ. Also, MCI was associated only with moderate [PR (95% CI): 1.62 (1.21-2.18) (p=0.001)] and severe [PR (95% CI) 1.79 (1.24-2.59) (p=0.002)] SQ deterioration.CONCLUSION: In this series, there was association between SQ and QoL in firefighters independent of clinical and demographics variables, which is observed both physical and mental levels. The exploration of sleep quality is relevant in this occupational group.
