Degradation of tropical forests affects people's livelihoods by reducing the availability of key resources. However, the drivers of degradation and the potential impact it has on the income of local communities are poorly understood. Fruits of the palm tree, Mauritia flexuosa, are an important non-timber forest product in the northern Peruvian Amazon, but harvesting has typically been done by cutting down trees with fruit. This study aimed to identify the drivers of degradation caused by this unsustainable harvesting practice, and estimate its impact on the potential income to local communities. As Mauritia flexuosa is dioecious (i.e. with separate male and female individuals), the proportion of females palms in a stand was used as the indicator of variation in degradation levels.
