Microalgae are a group of microorganisms of great interest, because of their high content of bioactive and nutraceutical molecules. However, the molecular genetic and biochemical aspects of the production of these molecules are very limited. To improve the molecular basis of these microorganisms, the objective of this study was to estimate the size of the genomes of the microalgae Ankistrodesmus sp., Haematococcus pluvialis and Scenedesmus sp. Genomic DNA was purified and analyzed by standard methods. Subsequently, genomes were sequenced using Illumina's massive sequencing technology and genome sizes were estimated using the Jellyfish bioinformatic tool. The results show that genomic DNA of high purity and quality was obtained. In addition, genomic sequences have generated abundant genetic information from 7.84 to 10.46 Gb. Also, the estimated genome sizes were 62.53 Mb for Ankistrodesmus sp., 75.23 for Haematococcus pluvialis and of 120.41 Mb for Scenedesmus sp. In conclusion, the genomic DNA purified from the three species of microalgae was of high quality, this was successfully sequenced and the sizes varied in the size range reported for other microalgae species.
