This research, part of the project “Dynamics of a tropical rain forest established in two niches of habitats”, aimed to determining variations in density and floristic diversity of the natural regeneration in environments of gaps in the wet white sand forest of the CIEFOR Puerto Almendra. Natural regeneration from forest species growing in eight gaps divided in thirty two 10 m x 10 m plots was evaluated. A total of 136 000 ind/ha were recorded in the seedling stage, 54 000 ind/ha in the pole stage and 15 800 ind/ha in the tree stage. The likelihood that two randomly selected individuals are of the same species in seedling, pole and tree stages is very low in all cardinal points (0,0699 to 0,1031). The pole stage facing both north and south shows a higher Simpson index value due to the influence of higher number of individuals found in these cardinal points. The diversity is high in the three stages when calculated with the Shannon-Wiever index. Research on the environment of gaps is needed in order to define the dynamic processes occurring in the natural regeneration in terms of floristic composition variation as well as annual inventories of these sample plots need to be carried out in order to find out if the light entrance is a limiting factor for the growing of species.
