Background: The tracheostomy is a medical surgical procedure in which an intervention in the airway is performed. Tracheostomy has become a good alternative for patients who need prolonged intubation. Where the most substantial benefits are the reduction in hospital stay and the high precision of the intensive care unit, as well as the most frequent complications are hemorrhage after the procedures, tracheal stenosis, analysis of the vocal cords among others. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of early tracheostomy (ET) and delayed tracheostomy (TT) in the recovery of patients in the intensive care unit in Cusco hospitals in 2018. Methods: The total population was 67 patients in two intensive care units for adults, being retrospectively analyzed. The patients were studied in two groups: early (<10 days) and late (> 10 days) tracheostomies. All data is recorded according to the research instrument. Results: Regarding the time of average hospital stay of the early tracheostomy was 21.56 and the delayed was of 43.45 with p of 0.001, for the total time of mechanical ventilation the mean for the TP was 472 hours and for the late 929 hours with a p-value of 0.001. Regarding post-tracheostomy complications, there is an association (OR 1.1912.86 95% CI, p of 0.025). Conclusions: Early tracheostomy presents a decrease in the time of hospital stay in the intensive care unit, as well as a decrease in the time of total mechanical ventilation. Regarding post-tracheostomy complications, the presentation of PD presents fewer complications compared to TT.
