The Cusco department currently faces significant issues regarding mobility, transportation, and traffic flow. Furthermore, the design of road infrastructures, inadequate traffic management, and lack of accessibility have led to a series of road safety problems. Therefore, through planning, research, and inspection, efforts are being made to reduce or ideally eliminate factors that contribute to critical accident points. Geometric characteristics of the roads and control devices influence the occurrence of these accidents, which need to be analyzed to determine the extent of their impact and negative consequences for road users. Due to this, it has been observed that there is an urgent need to implement traffic management measures and criteria with a focus on road safety and the well-being of citizens, which should be enduring in design. This research project proposes an analysis of road safety methodologies outlined in the Highway Safety Manual (HSM), the Road Safety Manual (MSV), and road design consistency for the CU-113 road section from Huambutio to Huayllabamba. This road section is under scrutiny due to its current condition and the high volume of vehicular traffic it experiences. In this research work, the first chapter presents the national and local road safety issues and outlines the research objectives for better comprehension of the topic. The second chapter provides references to all the background and literature used for the research, elaborating on road safety and the three proposed methodologies while also presenting the formulated hypotheses. The third chapter elaborates and explains the three methodologies – HSM, MSV, and Geometric Design Consistency – that the study follows to achieve the objectives outlined in the first chapter. It includes the data collection for the methodologies, data collection tables or formats, and the final processing of the obtained data. In the fourth chapter, the research results from each of the methodologies are presented, describing the significant factors for each one. Finally, in the fifth chapter, discussions are presented by comparing the theoretical background with the obtained results, specifically debating each applied methodology. Additionally, the conclusions of the research for the CU-113 departmental road section from Huambutio to Huayllabamba are expressed. Lastly, suggestions for improving and enhancing road safety in this section are proposed.
