The United Nations has recognized the critical link between safe water and sustainable development. Access to safe water not only reduces disease, but also provides a range of economic benefits for a community. However, the Cusco region still has a gap of 20 percentage points of households with inadequate bacteriological quality (lack of residual chlorine) in drinking water. Faced with this situation, this research seeks to study how residual chlorine in water distribution systems impacts the health of households in the city of Cusco during the 2016-2020 period. The research has an explanatory scope, is descriptive- correlational, has a non-experimental design and follows a quantitative approach. The sample is obtained from the National Household Survey and is made up of a total of 3,364 people surveyed. The main results find that an increase of 1 mg/Lt in the dosage of chlorine generates a reduction of 3.1 percentage points in the probability of having a symptom of discomfort (headache, fever, or nausea), we also see that it reduces the probability of have a disease associated with lack of chlorine in 5.6 percentage points. It is also found that living in a home without safe water increases the probability of having a symptom or disease associated with a lack of chlorine by 4.3 and 4.5 percentage points. Regarding the economic effects, it is found that an increase of 1 mg/Lt in the dosage of chlorine increases the main income by 67.9 soles per month and the total income by 74.21 soles per month. There is also a 2% reduction in the probability of being unemployed. Finally, an economic return analysis shows that the discounted sum of net benefits from 2030 (with a 10% discount rate) is 174 million soles. The discounted sum of net benefits represents 2.06% in terms of GVA in the year 2020 of the Cusco region.
