Onion (Allium cepa) is the vegetable that is most sown and produced in Peru. Arequipa is the region of greatest production and main supplier of the domestic market; produced 451,261 TM, which represented 57.8 percent of national production (780,471 TM) in 2015. Between 1990 and 2015, the harvested area, production and yield have increased at rates of: 4.01, 6.79 and 2.67 percent per year, going from a harvested area of 7,460 to 19,944 hectares; from a production of 151,050 to 780,471 TM and a yield of 20.25 to 39.14 TM/ha. This important development of the productive structure of the onion, given the technological improvement of the crop, has allowed to increase the volume of exports and the FOB value, being able to export 162,553 TM for an FOB value of US $ 62,687,639 in the year 2015. The improvement of the productive structure has allowed to improve the external commercial structure, helped by the commercial opening of Peru that has achieved several Free Trade Agreements during this period, which have been reflected in the increase in the number of Peruvian onion importing countries, which reached 21 countries in 2011. The level of competitiveness of sweet yellow onion, the main Peruvian export onion, is higher than Mexico and Canada (main competitors) in the US market. Peru, being competitive in price with respect to Mexico and Canada, still has advantages to increase its participation in that market. Therefore, it is concluded that between 1990 and 2015 there has been an important development of the productive, economic and external commercial structure, which has placed Peru in ninth place in the world ranking of onion exporting countries (Year 2015)
