The aim of this research was to appraise three growth media and to compare to the commonly-used medium for the production of Gerbera jamesonii L. (Salmara and Fender cultivars), using a container system in Lurin, Lima, Peru. The studied treatments –growth media – were: 1) 50% farm soil material + 50% rice husk (T1), 2) 50% farm soil material + 50% peat (T2), 3) 50% farm soil material + 25% rice husk + 25% peat (T3), and 4) 80% farm soil material and 20% rice husk (T4), the latter one considered the control treatment. The Growth Variables were: gained percent weight (PPG, in Spanish), fresh root weight (PFR), number of gained leaves (NHG), days to flower initiation (DIF), and total number of flowers per plant (NTFP). The quality variables were: flower cane length (FCL), flower diameter (FD), flower cane diameter (FVD), and flower fresh weight (FFP). This research determine that there was a significant increment in PPG, PFR and NTFP – growth variables –; however, there was not this raise in NHG and DIF variables. On the other hand; there were no significant statistical differences in quality variables among treatments. In 'Fender', the PPG and PFR variables of T2 and T3 were significantly superior to the control. T2 was superior to T4 in NHG, while T3 was superior to T4 in DIF. Additionally, there were no significant differences among treatments in the NTFP variable. In the variables DF, DVF and PFF, T3 was significantly superior to control. In contrast, there was no significant difference when evaluating the variable LVF among treatments.
