The present investigation was carried out in the sector of Nueva Rinconada, district of San Juan de Miraflores, Lima region. It was occupied since 2000 without urban planning and currently houses a population of approximately 11,000 families who do not have water and sewage services. As a result, many families have opted for self-construction of latrines and silos, which are currently being filled and there is no more space to dig more holes in their land. In addition, poor maintenance of the latrines and silos has generated an infectious focus in their homes. Faced with this problem, the Programa de educación Básica Laboral La Inmaculada (PEBAL La Inmaculada), executed from 2010 to 2020 the implementation of 229 dry toilets of the eco-sanitary double chamber models and the DryMix Toilet. The present study conducted an analysis of the process of implementation, operation and growth of the dry toilet technology. To do so, first, the implementation processes for each dry toilet model were described. Second, the critical points in the implementation of both models were analyzed. Third, the strategies applied to overcome the critical points of the implementation were listed. The operation and maintenance of each model and how this technology was developed during the 10 years of follow-up were also detailed. It is concluded that the double chamber model is an adequate alternative for the safe disposal of feces. However, it cannot be applied to all the families in the area because of their economic situation, since the dry toilets implemented in this project were subsidized; because the land has areas with poorly permeable soils for the infiltration of gray water; and because the planning of the houses has limited free space for implementation.
