Huanglongbing (HLB), a harmful disease of citrus, threatens to affect production in Peru. This study focused on evaluating the potential economic losses in the lemon production chain in the Piura region. Three prospective scenarios of HLB spread from 2024 to 2040 were simulated to estimate the cost-benefit of preventing these losses through a National Phytosanitary Program (NPP). Questionnaires to local producers were used to estimate losses in three scenarios: i) without HLB, ii) with HLB without NFP, and iii) with HLB with different levels of adoption of the NFP. The results point to risks that contribute to the spread of HLB, showing that the disease rapidly affects young trees. Cumulative economic losses could reach 1,104,076,110 soles between 2024 and 2040 without intervention. However, by adopting the NFP at 100por ciento, these losses could be reduced to 150,869,300 soles, avoiding not only production decline, but also generating social benefits. These findings underscore the critical importance of implementing the NFP to prevent losses, preserve jobs and protect the local economy. Without timely intervention, economic losses could jeopardize the sustainability of the national citrus sector.
