The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of chronic malnutrition and the hemoglobin levels in children aged 6 to 36 months of age in the Sarhua District, Ayacucho department, as well as describe the characteristics and consumption of energy, macro and micronutrients through a food consumption survey. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 43 children selected by two-stage probability sampling. Anthropometric measurements, hemoglobin dosage and a survey of consumption by 24 hour recall and the baseline rating of the sample were conducted. The results were: The prevalence of chronic malnutrition (H/A) in children was 55.8% with a higher incidence in children aged 6 – 12 months, 30.2% of children were at risk of malnutrition and only 14% were in normal nutritional status, and did not show acute malnutrition but were at 16.27% level of risk. The prevalence of anemia was 34.87%, a significant association between age and severity of anemia was found, and was associated with the development of diarrhea 15 days prior to evaluation. The calories as ingested nutrients and were significantly higher than that required were provided in a greater percentage from carbohydrates, there was also a marked deficiency in fats and micronutrients such as iron and zinc, which covers only 51.3% and 85,36% respectively in children 6 to 12 months and 75.6%, 71.95% in children aged 9-11 months and children 12 to 36 months only were deficient in zinc which only covers 72.7% of the requirement, due to low consumption of meat, fruits and vegetables in the family diet. The consumption of vitamin A exceeds the requirement, although its absorption may be affected as it is closely related to lipid metabolism and there is a deficiency of dietary lipids. Nutritional assessment indicates a deficit in lipids and the micronutrients iron and zinc, especially iron expressed as anemia in 34.87% and 55.8% of the population of chronic malnutrition of children assessed. This could be attributed among other things to the consumption of a diet based mainly on carbohydrates such as cereals and tubers, with little presence of food of animal origin
