This research was carried out in Marcapomacocha (Junín) from November 2011 to January 2012. The specific objectives were: i) characterization of the production system; ii) phenotypic characterization of the llama population using body weight and various biometrical measurements; and iii) phenotypic comparison between llamas showing guanaco color pattern and other color patterns. Twenty-two llama breeders were interviewed using a questionnaire to get information about the production system. Phenotypic characterization was carried out by taking body weight and biometrical measurements such as height at withers (WH), height at rump (RH), thoracic circumference (CC), upper neck circumference (UNC), bottom neck circumference (BNC), neck length (NL), dorsal body length (DBL), muscle volume (MV) and the rump area (RA), from 166 llama K'ara distributed in 5 age groups (milk teeth, major milk teeth, 2 permanent teeth, 4 permanent teeth, and full mouth). The survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and biometric measurements and weight were analyzed by using analysis of variance with the software SAS 9.2. The production system is an extensive system with mixed herds of llamas, alpacas and sheep. Llama population was composed by 64% K'aras, 12% Chaqus, and 24% Intermediate. The perception of breeders is that the llama population has been decreasing over the last 5 years. Ownership of land was mainly communal (59%). Overgrazing is the main difficulty for the sustainability of production system and maintaining of pasture condition. The selection was made taking in account size, shape, and color. The mean and standard deviation for the body measurements were: 108.6 ± 33.9 kg for BW; 108.8 ± 8.6 cm for WH; 109.7 ± 10.0 cm for RH; 115.2 ± 13.7 cm for CC; 36.5 ± 4.3 cm for UNC; 52.0 ± 7.1 cm for BNC; 63.7 ± 9.3 cm for NL; 86.8 ± 10.2 cm for DBL; 9509 ± 2923.9 cm3 for MV; and 282.0 ± 74.0 cm2 for RA. Differences between age groups were found for all variables; however, differences between sex were not found (P> 0.05). In mature females, guanaco color llamas had a higher average body weight than other colored llamas (P=0.08). The results of this study will be use as base information for the elaboration of a breeding program for K'ara llama in Marcapomacocha (Junín).
