Maize is a plant native to America, being the most widespread crop in the continent. In Peru, a great number of races, predominantly starchy, were raised before to the arrival of the Spaniards, the Andes being considered as a major center of diversity for maize. However, the production of yellow maize from breeding programs is gaining in importance. The increase in the area devoted to introduced maize and the possibility of a future introduction of GM maize makes extremely important to know the current status of the native races of maize, if there is gene flow, and the conditions under which it could occur. This thesis seeks to establish the basis for detecting gene flow that could happen in the future and the risks it would involve. Ten microsatellite primers were used for the molecular analysis of six contemporary populations of starchy maize, from Alazán, Mochero and Chancayano races. After that, genetic diversity and allelic composition of seven starchy maize samples preserved in the genebank of the Maize Program of the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina were analyzed, including populations of Alazán, Mochero and Chancayano. Thus, it was possible to compare the current gene pool of landraces with the one present in the genebank, following the evolution of populations. Three commercial hybrid yellow corn, and four yellow corn hybrids and a synthetic cultivar developed by the agricultural innovation government agency (Instituto Nacional de Innovación Agraria) were also evaluated. Comparing the samples of the starchy maize to the yellow hybrids, there were significant differences between the two groups, these being much higher than among races of maize of the same type. There is no evidence of loss of genetic diversity in general for the Alazán, Chancayano and Mochero races, comparing contemporary populations with older genebank collections from the Maize Program of the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina. However, the allelic composition of current populations differ significantly from those present in the genebank collections.
