Chondracanthus chamissoi (C. Agardh) Kützing is a red macroalgae of ecological, social and economic importance due to its use for direct human consumption (DHC) and as a raw material for carrageenan extraction. Due to this, a reproductive characterization was carried out and its reproductive potential was evaluated in subtidal meadow of Mendieta beach (14° 3.138'S, 76° 15.815'W) in order to generate information that allows making decisions for the resource management. To do this, destructive samplings were carried out using a quadrant of 0.25 m2 that was randomly launched along 10 perpendicular transects to the coastline. A total of 492 samples were drawn. In the laboratory, the samples were separated and weighed according to their reproductive phase and the individual's reproductive potential (PRi) and population's reproductive potential (PRp) were calculated. The results showed a predominance of tetrasporophytic phase in Mendieta beach with an average density that increase according to the depth gradient with .021 ± 0.033 Kg.m-2 (2 – 3 meters), 0.366 ± 0.306 Kg.m-2 (3 – 4 meters), 0.739 ± 0.396 Kg.m-2 (4 – 5 meters) y 0.941 ± 0.443 Kg.m-2 (5 – 5.5 meters). On the other hand, PRi value was significantly higher in carposporophytic individuals than in tetrasporophytic individuals with 215,965,422.7 ± 140,322,669.5 carpospores/individual as opposed to 153,419,057.5 ± 142,693,418.9 tetraspores/individual respectively (p < 0.05). However, the PRp was significantly higher for tetrasporophytic individuals with .6 x 1015 tetraspores/50 Ha than that obtained for carposporophytic individuals with 4.7 x 1015 carpospores/50 Ha (p < 0.05). The results suggest the importance of carposporophytic phase in the maintenance of Mendieta meadow, for which it is suggested to implement a selective extractive activity avoiding its extraction from the medium.
