Most of the Peruvian rivers are polluted due to the increased demand for water as a result of population increase, the dumping of elements and substances from agricultural and industrial activities, and the inadequate solid waste management. The Lurin River basin, located in Lima Region, has one of the last great extensions of green areas in this land; therefore, it is vitally important to protect this area. For that reason, the purpose of this research work was to evaluate the water quality in the lower section of Lurin River through 12 monitoring sessions, mainly analyzing the behavior of Dissolved Oxygen, Biological Oxygen Demand and microbiological parameters such as Total coliforms, Thermotolerant Coliforms and Escherichia coli. In parallel, deoxygenation and reaeration parameters of the river sections were determined. With this information, water quality of the river was modeled using GESCAL module of the AQUATOOL Decision Support System, which allowed predicting the behavior of Dissolved Oxygen, BOD and arbitrary contaminants. Subsequently, scenarios simulations were performed with different improvement alternatives such as reducing pollutants in contributors of the river, improving the treatment of the WWTPs and installation of a Wastewater Treatment Plant in Pachacamac district. The results indicate that the environmental quality standards for water are not accomplished in the sub-basin, predominantly due to landfills formation on the river slopes and effluents from San Bartolo WWTP; however, the simulation of different proposed scenarios would indicate that it is possible to recover water quality within the lower section of the Lurin River.
