The enrichment of guinea pig meat containing omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids by the supplementation of the diets with fish oil, sacha inchi seed and the combination of both was investigated. Forty eigth–42 day old male guinea pigs and 615 g body weight average were used. The guinea pigs were randomly assigned to four treatments with 3 replicates (pens) with 4 guinea pigs each. The dietary treatments were: 1) Control, 2) 1.0% fish oil supplemented diet, 3) 4.0% sacha inchi seed supplemented diet, and 4) 1.0% fish oil + 4.0% sacha inchi seed supplemented diet. The experiment lasted 28 days. It was found that the guinea pig meat on the fish oil supplemented diet contained 1.36% large chain omega-3 fatty acids (0.63% EPA: eicosapentaenoic acid + 0.73% DHA: docosahexaenoic acid) and that on the fish oil + sacha inchi seed supplemented diet 0.99% large chain omega-3 fatty acids (0.44% EPA + 0.55% DHA). The meat of the guinea pig fed on the control diet and that of those fed on the sacha inchi seed supplemented diet contained no large chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) but rather 5.45 y 12.92% of short chain omega-3 fatty acid α-linolenic acid (ALA). The ALA values were 5.82 and 10.20% in guinea pig meats from animals fed the fish oil and the fish oil + sacha inchi seed supplemented diets, respectively. On the other hand, the meat of the guinea pig fed on the sacha inchi diet showed, the highest level of polyunsaturated fatty acids (51.35%), the lowest content of monounsaturated fatty acids (21.97%) and also the lowest concentration of saturated fatty acids (25.49%). Weight gain was no influenced by the dietary treatments showing a satisfactory performance comparable to that obtained under commercial breeding, but with the advantage of having guinea pig meat with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids.
