In this investigation, the existence of antibiotic resistance was evaluated in Escherichia coli isolated from surface water of the Ventilla River, in a section near the district of Molinopampa, Amazonas, Peru. First, the quality of the surface water was evaluated in three microbiological parameters: total coliforms, fecal coliforms and E. coli. The parameters were quantified with Most probable number per 100 ml (MPN/100ml) values. The lowest value was 46 MPN / 100 ml and the highest was 1600NMP / 100ml in the three parameters. The highest MPN / 100 ml values were found in points located at the exit of the district. E. coli was isolated and biochemically identified. The isolates were evaluated against betalactam, tetracycline, aminoglycoside, fluoroquinolone, sulfonamide and trimethoprim antibiotics. According to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), the predominant resistance was to tetracycline with 36% resistant isolates, followed by ampicillin, with 20% resistant isolates and sulfametotaxol / trimethoprim with 16 % resistant isolates. Intermediate resistance to gentamicin was found in 60% of the isolates. From this information, it can be assured that there are E. coli isolates in the section of the river evaluated that have antibiotic resistance. No resistance was found against extended-spectrum betalactam antibiotics. However, the diameter of the antibiotic inhibition zone of each one of the evaluated antibiotics, decreased as it approached the points located near the effluents of the Molinopampa district. This suggests that the residues in Molinopampa´s wastewater promote the antibiotic resistance adquisition.
