The current research, about tzimbalo (Solanum caripense Dunal), studied the expression of genes involved in fruit quality. Then, the main objectives were to: 1) describe morphological variation on S. caripense ecotypes; 2) identify gene expression of flavanone 3-hydroxylase (F3H) and anthocyanidin synthase (ANS) associated to anthocyanins; 3) analyse expression of the gene p-coumaroyl ester 3-hydroxilase (C3H) associated to chlorogenic acid. For that, six samples from Ecuador (BIO) and three from Peru (IBT) were utilized. Morphological description was carried out using descriptors for S. muricatum; total RNA was isolated from fruit for identification of F3H and ANS transcripts in BIO-Ltg1 and BIO-Cyb1 through retrotranscription followed by semiquantitative PCR (RT-PCR). C3H relative expression was analysed in IBT-Lib1 during zero, five and fourteen days under influence of controlled temperature (10 ± 2 °C) and photoperiod (16 h light/8 h darkness) via retrotranscription followed by quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). The cophenetic correlation (0.88) of conglomerate analysis (CA) denoted good similarity between all Ecuadorian ecotypes and two distinct subgroups in Peruvian ecotypes. The first three principal components (PC) explained qualitatively 71.39% and quantitatively 81.34% of total variation Fruit flavour, seed diameter, corolla colour, fruit stripes, fruit length, inner placental area length and breadth were characters that contribute more to the variability. The level of ANS transcripts was similar on BIO samples and (Ltg1→48.20 ng/μL Cyb1→36.19 ng/μL). The value of the mean fold change in C3H expression was 3.32, 4.52 and 6.24 at time zero, five and fourteen days in postharvest conditions. The level of C3H transcripts was significantly differentiated and increased 2.92 units after fourteen days. These results demonstrate expression of F3H and ANS in BIO-Ltg1 and BIO-Cyb1, differential expression of C3H in IBT-Lib1, and focus the nutritional value of tzimbalo fruit.
