As a consequence of the overgrazing that has been occurring in the headwaters of the Mariño river basin, the areas of vegetation coverage are decreasing, which has a biodiversity of species that have to do with the capture and infiltration of water, and these problems have not been studied for this region. To better understand and provide solutions in this territorial space, three ecosystems of greatest importance were studied, such as grasslands or puna grasslands, wetlands and native forests where species such as Stipa ichu, Distichia muscoides y Polylepis racemosa predominate, and a vast biodiversity of other species. In this ecosystem there are also the biological crusts (biocrusts) that allow an adequate water regulation, by means of water collection, decrease of the runoff and direct influence in the process of infiltration and percolation of the water towards the subsoil, allowing a greater water supply in water sources such as springs located in the middle basin. The objective of this research was to determine the economic value of the hydrological flows, taking as a base the functional biodiversity, for which it was determined the water offer in the three evaluated ecosystems, the water demand for agricultural and population purposes and finally the economic valuation of the water. With regard to the water supply in grassland, wetland and native forest ecosystems, they generate a total water supply of 4,264,549 m3 /year, and the water demand for agriculture and the population is 4,498,956 m3 /year, generating a water deficit of 239,038 m3 /year. Subsequently, the economic evaluation of the water supply service allowed us to determine that the value of water in the Mariño River Basin is S/. 0.51 m3 , which will allow the generation of public policies aimed at the conservation of the headwaters of the Mariño river. Based on these results, in these three ecosystems that predominate in the Mariño river basin, it is proposed to carry out management and conservation activities, such as the closure of grasslands, for the recovery of plant cover, conservation of wetlands where the biocrusts are found and finally the reforestation with native species like Polylepis racemosa.
