The present research was carried out to evaluate the transformation pathways of inorganic nitrogen produced in two closed systems of juvenile farming of Arapaima gigas, being these a recirculation system (RAS) and a biofloc technology system (BFT). Both system was maintained under the same operating conditions (equal water volume, initial biomass, food and feed rate). The experiment was developed in 56 days, during which measurements of total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN), nitrites and nitrates were carried out to evaluate their transformation over time, and total suspended solids (TSS) were measured in both systems as an indicator of growth of heterotrophic bacteria. In the RAS, the efficiency of elimination of ammoniacal nitrogen and nitrites was also evaluated, using formulas applied in aquaculture biofilters. In addition to this, a nitrogen balance and a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were performed to identify the main transformation ways of inorganic nitrogen. Finally, it was determined that RAS was the best closed system of farming, which maintained inorganic nitrogen levels in safe range for the species, with a higher incorporation of nitrogen in fish biomass (41.2%) compared to biofloc systems (28.2%). It is concluded that in the RAS the transformation of the inorganic nitrogen was governed by bacterial nitrification, whereas in the systems with BFT the nitrogen immobilization was achieved by incorporation into the bacterial biomass and by nitrification. As for the recirculation systems, percent ammonia nitrogen total elimination were determined from 17 to 79%, a volumetric TAN conversion rate of 29 to 281 g.m-3. day-1 and a volumetric nitrite conversion rate of 2 to 250 g.m-3. day-1.
