A total of 9 bofedales were evaluated in the regions of Ancash, Arequipa, Huancavelica and Puno at an altitude higher than 3800 m.a.s.l during the dry season and rainy season. The objectives of this study were to determine the condition of grazing, evaluate the floristic composition and estimate the amount of C as well as the quality of organic matter stored in the soil. The grazing condition of the bofedales was evaluated using Parker´s procedure modified by Florez and Malpartida, which considers the acceptability of plants, forage index, vegetation cover and vigor index. The percentage of organic matter was estimated using the Walkey and Black method whereas the C quality was assessed using the ratio of humic substances which are humic acid, fulvic acid and humin by the Kononova methodology. The results indicate that the majority of the bofedales have a good or fair condition because they presented more desirable plants than undesirable such as Distichia muscoides, Plantago tubulosa, Alchemilla diplophylla and Werneria Pygmaea. Poor bofedales presented undesirable plantas such as Oxychloe andina, Aciachne acicularis and Plantago rigida. On the other hand, bofedales with better conditions for grazing have lower stock of C stored but high organic matter quality which may be related to the presence of more desirable plants on good bofedales that are grazed more and therefore there is greater consumption by herbivores than a poor bofedal which causes less C return to the ground and promotes greater incorporation of soluble N which improves the C: N ratio of organic matter and as a consequence the quality of the matter organic is higher.
