Research on aflatoxins in Peru is limited, although aflatoxins B1 (AFB1) and M1 (AFM1) require monitoring due to their toxicity. The aim was to contribute to the safety of milk by evaluating the current situation of aflatoxin contamination and to establish strategies to reduce its content. For one year, 529 and 235 milk and feed samples were evaluated in a dairy in northern Peru. Sixteen percent of the milk samples exceeded the European legislation limit of 0.05 μg/l, with the amount of AFM1 being higher (P<0.05) in December than in the other months of the year. 2.59, 20 and 50 percent of maize, wheat midding and cottonseed meal exceeded the European legislation limit of 5 μg/kg for AFB1. Soybean mealand whole soybean meal had AFB1 content but did not exceed the limit. As one of the strategies to reduce the AFM1 content in milk is the use of sequestrants, a study was carried out with 12 cows to which 160.6 μg of AFB1 was added to the ration. The cows were divided into two treatments (T1) contaminated ration only, (T2) contaminated ration plus sequestrant (yeast fragments). The sequestrant was able to decrease the AFM1 content in 42 percent of the milk samples tested below the FDA MRL of 0.5 μg/l, no differences (P<0.05) were found between treatments. Monitoring of maize, soybean cake and wheat bran was carried out in Lurín in two seasons (winter and summer). Only one maize sample taken in the winter was above the MRL of 5 μg/kg AFB1, the content of the other samples was below the MRL. No differences (P<0.05) were found between seasons.
