To determine the effect of renewal pruning and fertilization as cultural practices for sustainable production of coffee (Coffea Arabica L.) var. 'Caturra' orchards, a study was conducted from 2011 to 2013. Three cutting heights (30, 60 and 90 cm) and two levels of fertilization (with and without fertilization) were evaluated on three orchard ages (6, 8 and 10 years). A randomized complete block design with treatments arranged in a 3 x 2 factorial and four replications was used. In each treatment, agronomic variables were evaluated in 12 plants. A highly significant difference was found among orchard ages and also among pruning heights in all variables except yield. Higher number of shoots (5.8) longer shoots (14.8 cm), and higher number of productive branches (10.7) were found in plants from six years old orchards. However, plants from eight years old orchards produced the greatest number of productive nodes (5.7), flowers (104.7) and the highest yield (849.4 g/plants). With regard to pruning height, plants that were pruned at 60 cm in height, showed greater number of shoots ( 5.3) having a good size (14.7 cm), higher number of branches (12.1) and productive nodes (5.8). They also showed greater number of flowers (104.2) and higher yield (817.5 g/planta). Fertilized plots had higher vegetative growth, higher flowering capacity and greater yield as compared to plots without fertilization. Disease incidence varied from 2.4 to 3.7 % for Mycena citricolor and from 4.7 to 7.12% for Hemileia vastatrix. With regard to the sustainability of pruning, it reached 98% of acceptance in its social dimension; 92% in its economic dimension (since 92 % of farmers indicated that it increases yield and economic return) and 85% in its environmental dimension (since 85 % of farmers indicated that it reduces the incidence of pests and diseases and also because 94 % of them consider the benefits derived from using the stubble as mulching material for nutrient release to the soil. It is concluded that the orchard age, pruning height and fertilization all contribute to the benefits derived from the renewal pruning since they have positive effects on the coffee yield components. Higher yields were obtained on fertilized plots while orchard age and pruning height gave similar yields. In general, disease incidence was very low. Renewal pruning is a cultural practice for sustainable production of coffee in the central highland tropic of Peru.
