The introduction of dormant alfalfa in high areas has increased milk production due to its nutritional value. Therefore, the present investigation aims to determine the HC of bovine milk production in a system with dormant alfalfa in the Puno region. This study is developed following the guidelines of the IDF and the International Standard ISO 14040 and 14044, it was calculated in kg of CO2 equivalents per-kg of milk corrected with fat and protein (LCGP) as a functional unit. The exploratory and descriptive research work was carried out in the department of Puno with 16 livestock ranchers, belonging to the districts of Ácora, Paucarcolla, Taraco and Ayaviri. Annual milk production per cow was 3366.27 ± 976.22 kg LCGP (CV =29%), dormant alfalfa consumption 1.59 ± 0.4 kg DM/cow/day (CV = 27.9%) and the average HC for the analyzed database 1.03 ± 0.14 kg CO2-eq/LCGP (CV = 13.7%). Ayaviri presented a HC of 0.92 kg CO2-eq/LCGP and the highest milk production (11.34 kg LCGP /cow/day) with a r = - 0.580 p <0.05. The greatest impact of extensive systems on the environment is due to enteric fermentation of livestock (78.2 ± 3.7%.) (97.64 ± 8.7 kg CH4/cow/year). Puno was characterized by having a diet based on forages (+ 90%), with a low nutritional value (ED, 2430.97 ± 26.98 Kcal). It is suggested to improve the quality of the diet, consequently, the productivity of the animal, being possible to reduce the carbon footprint of milk and at the same time improve the economic income of the farmer
