The Work of Professional Sufficiency (TSP) entitled “Determination of the background level for soil metals in environmental evaluations of mining projects“ was carried out from the work experience obtained in the Institution of Environmental Evaluation (IEA) of MINAM, for which work from November 2015 to December 2020, specifically the TSP focuses on the results obtained from the background level of the environmental assessment carried out on a mining exploration project located in the department of Puno in 2017 and 2018. The objective of the TSP is to determine the background level and background threshold for metals in soils in the environmental evaluations of mining projects under exploration, so that these calculated values serve to compare the results of future evaluations in the study area. To calculate the background level and background threshold, the statistical program ProUCL developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was used. The calculated background level and background threshold results for zinc, cadmium, chromium, mercury, lead and vanadium are below the Environmental Quality Standards (ECA) for Soil for agricultural use and the values of the Soil Quality Guidelines for the Protection of Environmental and Human Health - Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environmental (SQGPEHH) for agricultural use. The background level of barium is slightly lower than that of the ECA, while the background threshold value is higher than that of the ECA. Boron and beryllium presented background level and background threshold values higher than the SQGPEHH values for agricultural use. Since the background level and background threshold values are in many cases not close to the values established in the ECAs and AQGPEHH, it is recommended that the calculated background level and background threshold values be used for the comparison of the results of future soil evaluations of the study area.
