Since the beginning of twentieth century, there were researchers that studied dynamics and risks of rangeland degradation. Also, they created new conceptual models and methodologies to evaluate rangelands. Condition and trend are indicators that demonstrate the degree of rangeland departure of its climax state or potencial in a specific time and direction taken by this change, respectively. A recent concept named rangeland health, arise from a more ecologic perspective. Condition/ rangeland health and trend are fundamental requirements to develop management plans and conservation programs. This study was conducted with the purpose to compare and analyse the more common methods to assess condition and trend: Parker 3 – Step, Milton Rangeland Health Assessment and Pyke State of Rangeland Health (Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health - IIRH) for condition and rangeland health, plus Colorado State University, Arizona State University and Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina for trend. The study was located in UP Conocancha at SAIS Pachacutec – Junín and MUS Huishlamachay in San Antonio de Rancas Communal Cooperative – Pasco where rangelands were being grazed by vicuñas. There were identified differences in properties and capacities of methods to estimate condition and rangeland health. Although, statistics differences were not found between Parker and Milton’s results, there were between Pyke and both other methods. The seleccion of the appropriate method will depend on researcher’s objectives. On the other hand, there were no differences in properties and capacities of methods to estimate trend, and statistics differences were not found between their results. However, it is recommended to use Arizona method when training pastoralists because of its greater ease to transfer knowledge.
