This paper aims to develop a composting pilot scale proposal from green waste generated from the pruning activities of public green areas of Miraflores District. With this proposal, we sought to provide a sustainable solution to the current management of organic waste; thus, avoiding its disposal in the limited number of landfills within Lima City; moreover, seeking their reincorporation to the green areas of the district. The investigation began in August 2012 at the National Agrarian University (UNALM), it was carried out at the Soil Conservation and Sustainable Agriculture Workshop (CONSAS). The physico-chemical and microbiological analysis of the final product were carried out in the laboratories of Soil, plants, water and fertilizers analysis (LASPAF) and Marino Tabusso respectively within the University. The pilot proposal included from the characterization and pretreatment of waste, the comparison of four different formulations for its treatment, the monitoring and recording of parameters during the composting process, the quality analysis of the final compost and its comparison with international standards, the phytotoxicity assessment in radish seeds (Crimson Giant) using the adaptation of Zucconi’s test, the design proposal of a composting plant according to Miraflores’ composting requirements and; finally, the profitability assessment for the waste management proposal. From the results, we concluded that the compost could be typified as class B according to Chilean standard (NCh2880.Of2004). The economic and technical viability of compost production was demonstrated, avoiding monthly shipment of 230 Mg of waste to the landfill; moreover, generating savings in present value for S/. 5,106.22 Nuevos Soles at the time the proposal is implemented.
