Recent studies have suggested that the modulation of the Kuroshio Extension, driven by mesoscale eddies, profoundly affect the basin scale physical and biogeochemical oceanography in the region. However, it remains unclear how these changes do affect the distribution and abundance of fish species in this region. In this context, this study evaluates and analyzes the effects of mesoscale eddies on the relative abundance of swordfish Xiphias gladius in the Kuroshio Extension, using swordfish data obtained by longliners during the period 2004-2010, along with an oceanographic database named FORA-WNP30. During the 2004-2010 study period, the Kuroshio Extension presented two phases of stability: a stable phase for the years 2004, 2005 and 2010; and an unstable phase in the years 2006-2009. According to the results, a greater relative abundance of swordfish was observed within the anticyclonic eddies in the northern region (36–45°N) of the Kuroshio Extension, especially during the unstable phase. This is due to the interannual modulation presented by the mesoscale eddies in the study region, presenting a greater formation of anticyclonic eddies in the northern region during the unstable phase of the Kuroshio Extension.
