The general objective of this study was to determine the influence of cognitive processes on the intention to segregate solid waste in students of the Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina. It was based on the theory of motivation to protect, which determines that the actions that a person may decide to take in the face of a threat, will be influenced by the fear of the negative consequences of this. For this, the cognitive processes that it undergoes are the evaluation of the threat, made up of perceived severity and perceived vulnerability; and the assessment of coping, made up of perceived self-efficacy, perceived efficacy, and response cost. The sample consisted of undergraduate university students and was stratified according to all the faculties that the university has. A Likert-type survey was carried out to obtain the information; and the data were analyzed with statistical techniques such as Spearman's correlation coefficient. The results obtained showed that there is a positive relationship between the proposed cognitive processes and the intention to segregate. In addition, it was shown that the sub-dimension with the greatest influence is response efficiency, followed by perceived severity and perceived vulnerability. Likewise, there is a significant intention to segregate solid waste among university students. Finally, it is recommended that the university be able to consider the factors that influence students to achieve more effective environmental campaigns and that it can be analyzed in a broader way including at all levels of the university community such as teachers and administrative personnel.
