The main objectives of this research were: a) to identify the characteristics and management of alluvial ecosystems, b) to characterize and classify the various agricultural systems used within the floodplain, and c) to identify the socioeconomic characteristics of riverine farmers. Alluvial agroecosystems are of great interest for investors, policy makers and practitioners, and they are of significant importance to riverine populations in the Ucayali Region. However, agricultural development initiatives based on intensive cropping have not prospered, and there is a lack of knowledge about the elements of agricultural systems and conditions of poverty persist. The study was conducted in four shipibo-konibo native communities, selected based on three key factors: location relative to alluvial soils, economic orientation and degree of market articulation. Interviews, participatory observation and case studies, were conducted. For the analysis of the variables under study, descriptive statistics and the Ward’s method for cluster analysis, were used. Results indicate that traditional management systems of alluvial agroecosystems still predominate among the shipibo-konibo and that there is no dependence on external inputs. The availability of soils is relative variable with the formation of mudflats and beaches being unpredictable. The sandbanks are abundant and scattered, but they are not extensive and are dissected by backswamps. Four different flexible and dynamic agricultural systems were identified, based on land availability, type of agroecosystems used, crop types and crop varieties. Plantains (Musa sp.) and maize (Zea mays) are the main crops planted for subsistence and cash income. The profitability of the system is questionable due to low and uncertain market prices, increasing cost of living and seasonal oversupply of product, limiting the prospects for socioeconomic improvement for riverine farmers. To overcome this, the shipibo-konibo complement agriculture with other activities such as making handicrafts, fishing or hunting, although the two latest are overexploited. The alluvial agroecosystems are decisive for the life and economy of the shipibo-konibo, but even at subsistence level, it is necessary to optimize their agriculture potential with ecological emphasis and valuation that are promoted by agrarian policies in a context of sustainable management of the alluvial soils.
